The UFC doesn’t have a lot of stars, but Nate Diaz has one of the highest profiles in the sport. The 34-year-old, born in Stockton, California, has long been a fan-favorite and well-known fighter with a record of 19 wins – five by knockout – and 11 losses – one by knockout.

Nate Diaz is also a long-time cannabis advocate and has been instrumental in the reforms surrounding the use of the drug in the UFC. Here are five facts about Nate Diaz and his cannabis use:

Fact 1#

Nate Diaz is never one to go with the crowd and he proved it on the eve of his return to the Octagon in his fight against Anthony Pettis at UFC 241. After his long absence from a UFC fight since 2016, he came to the Honda Center Arena in Anaheim, California looking in fighting form. He later went ahead to light up a CBD joint and shared it with the crowd.

Fact #2

Although well-known for his smoking habit, Nate has never tested positive for cannabis. He said he smokes Cannabidiol (CBD) from his own cannabis company, Game Up Nutrition, and that his products are always legal.

Fact #3

Nate Diaz was pivotal in USADA implementing the “the Nate Diaz rule” and removing CBD from their list of prohibited substances. The controversy surrounding his smoking CBD eventually led to the UFC striking a 5-year sponsorship deal with Aurora Cannabis to study cannabidiol (CBD) and how it can be beneficial to athletes – a deal which reportedly nets the UFC around $15 million per year, for the next five years.

Fact #4

Nate Diaz and his brother Nick also recently launched his own cannabis oil (CBD) company together, called Game Up Nutrition. GAME UP is an organic and vegan super nutrition company that offers varieties of CBD products some of which include CBD Oil, CBD Muscle Balm, CBD lip Balm, and so on.

Fact #5

Nate Diaz was kicked out of school for fighting and selling cannabis. It is quite an irony for Nate because he is today fighting and selling cannabis for a living. He feels intrigued and amused at the new perception cannabis is getting and was compelled to tell TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter, “You know what’s crazy to me, the best part about this whole thing is … I got kicked out of school for fighting and selling weed. And now for a professional career, I’m fighting and selling CBD… Cannabis is coming soon.”
