What Is Kief?

Kief is the collection of loose trichome crystals that naturally fall off cannabis flower — the fine, golden powder you see at the bottom of your grinder. These trichomes contain the highest concentration of cannabinoids and terpenes in the plant. Kief typically tests between 40–60% THC, making it significantly stronger than flower but more affordable than processed concentrates like shatter or live resin.

How to Use Kief

  • Top a bowl — Sprinkle kief on top of flower in a pipe or bong for an instant potency boost
  • Roll it into a joint — Mix kief with ground flower or coat the outside of a joint with oil and roll in kief (a "twax" joint)

Is kief stronger than regular weed?

Yes — roughly 2–3x stronger. Kief is pure trichomes without plant material, so it contains a much higher concentration of THC and terpenes. A small sprinkle on top of a bowl or joint makes a noticeable difference in potency.

How do I collect kief from my grinder?

Use a grinder with a kief catcher (the bottom chamber separated by a fine screen). Over time, trichomes fall through the screen and accumulate. To collect more, put a clean coin in the middle chamber and shake gently after grinding. Freezing your grinder for 30 minutes before collecting also helps the kief separate more easily.

Can I dab kief?

You can, but it's not ideal. Raw kief contains plant material that combusts rather than vaporizes cleanly. For dabbing, press your kief into hash first, or use a screen in your banger to prevent it from falling through. Processed concentrates like rosin or shatter give a cleaner dab experience.

How should I store kief?

Keep kief in a small glass jar with a tight seal in a cool, dark place. Avoid plastic containers — static cling causes trichomes to stick to the sides and you'll lose product. Handle kief as little as possible since body heat melts the trichome heads. Properly stored, kief stays potent for 6–12 months.
